The fight for Dragon Island – BBC News

Komodo dragons have enthralled the world for decades. The earth’s largest lizards, can only be found in one tiny corner of the globe.
Tourists have flocked to see them and locals believe they are physically and spiritually related to them. But this human-lizard relationship may be about to change.
Indonesian regional authorities want to return Komodo Island to the dragons, in order to protect them. They want to close it to mass tourism, and expel the inhabitants who have lived alongside the lizards for generations. A battle is underway for the future of dragon land

  1. She should’ve explained more about the Komodo Dragons SO I’LL GIVE SOME INSIGHT!

Why the population is stable because there is not too many rises and lowers because the Momma Komodo’s EAT THERE BABIES and only a few get away by climbing trees and when there old enough they’ll come out of the Tree!

AND THAT THE TRUTH FOLKS YALL HAVE A GREAT DAY BYE!!!

  2. I know the world is watching the U.S. of AMERICA government and campaigns for 2020.
I agree with Dr. Wm. Barber.
Saying that Trump is a white nationalist isn’t enough. We must show how in policy, not just emotionally & culturally. Then we must show how white nationalism’s policy agenda hurts the entire nation & population.
Many people who supported Trump are not necessarily white supremacists. Many are people he lied to, used & bamboozled. When they see how, some of them will leave him. ????????? I'm just sharing. Thanks in advance.

  3. Yeah fuck the dragons. They are going to lose the battle anyway because that’s the way Humans are. We will make everything extinct. These videos are all hyperbole.

  4. Magnificent creatures. The historic relationship to the locals cannot be ignored.

What about reports that the giant lizards (komodo like) thought extinct, are being seen again in the outback of Australia?

  5. I agree with the governors reasoning, the komodos should come first. People are not always quick to make change however it makes sense to restrict the villagers and tourists so these animals have a better chance of growth and repopulating the island.

  6. This highlights an issue that I've been thinking about recently. So many indigenous peoples of color must now make accommodations to address problems that they didn't create. The attempts of some to fix the environmental destruction they have caused ends up hurting other people. I keep hearing people say hyperbolic things like "humans are the disease of the earth," but that's not really true. Only a relatively small amount of people have actually caused the harm to the earth and its creatures. Animals like the passenger pigeon and the quagga lived in harmony with the native people for thousands of years, only for them to go extinct quickly due to colonists. Maasai people in East Africa sustainably hunted lions for thousands of years before Europeans came and endangered them, forcing Maasi people to abandon that tradition. Inuit seal hunters now face the same prospect. This is not "humanity's" fault. Its the fault of the greedy, powerful people of this world. And now innocent people like these villagers are eviction from their home to make up for the actions of other people. I'm disgusted.

  7. I am torn. On one side, I agree that in order to conserve the existence of Komodo, it is better if they are left alone in their own natural habitat without human intervention, yes the people said that they will help protect the Komodo, but those are only the people interviewed in this video, we don't know about the other people.

On the other hand, it definitely is unfair for the good people on that island, who consider the Komodo their siblings, part of their society and only want to live together in harmony.

I am sceptical about that governor, however, 9:53 "become an exclusive place for just a handful of wealthy people", if you want to let the Komodo to just live in the wild, what are the wealthy people there for? I don't know much about him and won't claim to, but just based on that statement, it felt like he only wanted to monopolize the tourism industry on that island.

In the end, I just want to wish the best for the people on that island and I hope even if they should eventually be relocated, they will live prosperously with abundant happiness in their new home, and of course for the Komodo to live where they are supposed to, far from the grasp of greedy golden hands which reek of the blood from our wounded Mother Earth.

  8. Seemingly no more ridiculous a fable than a baby born to a virgin and walking on water, buuuut it kinda is. A dragon born to a woman……poor uneducated natives, sooooo fundamentally disconnected from reality yet so happy. I just hate that kind of stupidity amongst any people, muslims, christians, any group that is duped into ignorance.

  9. And the parched ground shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water: in the habitation of dragons, where each lay, shall be grass with reeds and rushes.

"Hearken to me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek the Lord: look unto the rock whence ye are hewn, and to the hole of the pit whence ye are digged. Look unto Abraham your father, and unto Sarah that bare you: for I called him alone, and blessed him, and increased him. For the Lord shall comfort Zion: he will comfort all her waste places; and he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the Lord; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody. Hearken unto me, my people; and give ear unto me, O my nation: for a law shall proceed from me, and I will make my judgment to rest for a light of the people. My righteousness is near; my salvation is gone forth, and mine arms shall judge the people; the isles shall wait upon me, and on mine arm shall they trust. Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath: for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: but my salvation shall be for ever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished. Hearken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; fear not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their revilings. For the moth shall eat them up like a garment, and the worm shall eat them like wool: but my righteousness shall be for ever, and my salvation from generation to generation. Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the Lord; awake, as in the ancient days, in the generations of old. Art thou not it that hath cut Rahab, and wounded the dragon? Art thou not it which hath dried the sea, the waters of the great deep; that hath made the depths of the sea a way for the ransomed to pass over? Therefore the redeemed of the Lord shall return, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy shall be upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee away. I, even I, am he that comforteth you: who art thou, that thou shouldest be afraid of a man that shall die, and of the son of man which shall be made as grass; And forgettest the Lord thy maker, that hath stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth; and hast feared continually every day because of the fury of the oppressor, as if he were ready to destroy? and where is the fury of the oppressor? The captive exile hasteneth that he may be loosed, and that he should not die in the pit, nor that his bread should fail. But I am the Lord thy God, that divideth the sea, whose waves roared: The Lord of hosts is his name. And I have put my words in thy mouth, and I have covered thee in the shadow of mine hand, that I may plant the heavens, and lay the foundations of the earth, and say unto Zion, Thou art my people. Awake, awake, stand up, O Jerusalem, which hast drunk at the hand of the Lord the cup of his fury; thou hast drunken the dregs of the cup of trembling, and wrung them out. There is none to guide her among all the sons whom she hath brought forth; neither is there any that taketh her by the hand of all the sons that she hath brought up. These two things are come unto thee; who shall be sorry for thee? desolation, and destruction, and the famine, and the sword: by whom shall I comfort thee? Thy sons have fainted, they lie at the head of all the streets, as a wild bull in a net: they are full of the fury of the Lord, the rebuke of thy God. Therefore hear now this, thou afflicted, and drunken, but not with wine: Thus saith thy Lord the Lord, and thy God that pleadeth the cause of his people, Behold, I have taken out of thine hand the cup of trembling, even the dregs of the cup of my fury; thou shalt no more drink it again: But I will put it into the hand of them that afflict thee; which have said to thy soul, Bow down, that we may go over: and thou hast laid thy body as the ground, and as the street, to them that went over."

    – Isaiah 51:1-23
