Why the Queen’s Treatment of Meghan Markle Is Surprisingly Different – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

The Queen reportedly has made an “unusual effort” to welcome Meghan Markle to the royal family and there’s a very good reason for that, according to one royal expert. Queen Elizabeth doesn’t typically extend that type of support, so it’s a meaningful statement about how she feels about Markle.

The two share a close relationship

On the podcast “Royals,” from New Idea magazine, host Zoe Burrell spoke with royal expert Angela Mollard about a point royal commentator Duncan Larcombe made to The Sun recently. Larcombe shared this opinion about the Queen and Markle’s relationship: “Meghan seems to have forged a particularly close relationship with the Queen if you compare that to when other people have married into the Royal Family.”

He added: “The Queen last year in the first few months of Meghan’s entry into the Royal Family, made a particular and slightly unusual effort to welcome her in.”

Mollard agreed with this assessment, calling it “interesting,” explaining: “The reason being, in that Meghan wasn’t English, she wasn’t like Diana [or Kate]. Kate, of course, had years and years with William. They shared that time at university, they spent more than a decade together before they married.”

She continued, noting: “Kate had a very slow immersion into
the Royal Family, she got to know the Queen, the way the system worked,
the protocols and processes. She also was English, so she had grown up
with the Royal Family, she knew what they stood for, what they meant.”

In comparison, Mollard shared that “Meghan didn’t know the
British system. An American wouldn’t necessarily see the work in the
Commonwealth, all the duty that goes on.”

Due to Markle being new to the British system, Mollard noted that she believes “the Queen would have gone to great lengths” to get the new duchess up to speed.

The Queen has the royal family’s longevity in mind

Part of the reason the Queen made this extra effort, Mollard
believes, is because the Queen has the longevity of the royal family to
consider.

The royal expert dished on some of the more challenging years the family faced, sharing, “Remember, the Queen’s come from a position when there was a lot of unrest in the Royal Family. There was a lot of infighting between courtiers, the whole system was not working when the relationships broke down between Andrew and Fergie, and Diana and Charles, there was a lot of backbiting.”

Things are now “harmonious” for the family, with members keeping personal details out of the media, Mollard noted, adding, “They’re marrying later, they’re making good marital choices… The Queen knows that this is a very important part of the longevity of the Royal Family going forward.”

She added, “The unrest caused by those years through the nineties was so very difficult and so very damaging to the brand that is the Royal Family… She knows, and has now seen, what it is to have global attention on a member of the family.”

Mollard also dove into the media and public interest in Markle, not unlike that of Princess Diana. She explained, “No one had had that level of attention before Diana. And we know now, Meghan is getting more attention than Kate —  because she’s more controversial, because she’s American, because she’s different, because she’s got a complex family.”

She added that the Queen has likely “put the time and energy into it because she would always want Meghan to turn to her first before she would turn outwards, to the media, to talking to friends.”

Mollard noted that if Markle “had a problem with the royal system and the way that it works, if the Queen has established a good relationship with her, Meghan is far more likely to turn to her if she is struggling.”
